Figurative Language

Respected sir,
name is not given to this poem but i have  try to give it a name Bandhan.
In this blog I have try to interpret a Hindi poem Bandhan with the help of  Practical Criticism of I.A. Richards. So first of all we will do over literal reading and after that we will study this poem according to I.A. Richards views.

Over literal reading:-

In the first stanza there is a word telling that an old man is drinking oil to his moustache. How  can it possible? Moustache never drinks oil. So the poem is confusing. Post’s metaphors are inconvenient.
In the next line there is also problem  that skin wrinkle is like net and he questions that how will he come out? This looks not possible. Old man, fish, lust all this words are not connecting very well. It gives no meaning to the poem. in poem it is said that object is said a brook. but  how can a girl be brook?

Literal reading:-

This poem is social criticism about our orthodoxy. That old man are not allowing women to go outside.  So all this are metaphors- vehicle to convey the meaning what he wanted to say. Poem appeals that since how long time you will remain slave of male dominance. Thus it gives voice to female. It can be said feminist poem.
